COLLEGE STATION – The Temple 7 on 7 team opened pool play on Friday at Veterans Field in College Station with a disappointing record of 0-3. However, despite the record, Temple found themselves within a pair of plays that could have resulted with a record of 2-1.
Temple did not play well in their opener with Sharyland Pioneer but did find themselves playing well enough to win their next two games. In their games with Lewisville Hebron and Cy Falls, the Wildcats came up one play short in the final minute of play in each game that could have determined the outcome in favor of the Wildcats.
Even with the record of 0-3, Temple will advance to the Championship Bracket on Saturday as both Sharyland Pioneer and Lewisville Hebron were disqualified from the tournament following a physical altercation between the two squads following their contest.
Temple will face College Station on Saturday morning at 9:00 am on Field 7 at Veteran’s Field. Saturday’s bracket play is single elimination and should the Wildcats win, they will face the winner of the Cy Woods/North Forney game at 10:15.
Here are the results of the three pool play games played on Friday.
In Game 1 vs. Pioneer, the Wildcats got off to a sluggish start as they trailed 28-0 at the half. However, the Wildcats showed there resilience as they tallied three second half touchdowns with quarterback Vance Willis finding Quintin Johnston twice in the endzone and KD Freeman once. Temple dropped game one to Pioneer by a score of 47-20.
In Game 2, the Lewisville Hebron jumped out to an early 13-0 lead on Temple before a Willis to Johnston TD connection cut the lead to 13-6. Hebron scored just before the half to take a 20-6 lead at the break.
Temple came out strong to start the second half with Willis connecting with Johnston and later Anthony Jackson to tie the game at 20-20 following a successful 2-point conversion pass to Quintin Johnston.
Hebron regained a 27-20 lead with less than two minutes remaining, however, the Wildcats engineered an impressive drive in less than two minutes, capped with a Willis to KD Freeman TD reception. However, the Wildcats PAT fell short of the receiver on the final play of the game to give Hebron a 27-26 victory.
In game 3, the Wildcats had a much better start as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Cy Woods as Willis found Anthony Jackson over the middle for the TD.
Temple then alternated scores with Cy Woods. Willis touchdown passes to Quintin Johnston (12-6), AJ McDuffy (19-13) and Anhtony Jackson (26-20). However, with a turnover on downs, Cy Woods scored on the final play of the first half to take a 27-26 lead at the break.
Cy Woods opened the second half with a TD to extend their lead to 34-26 before a Willis to Luke Allen touchdown pass cut the lead to 34-32 and a Willis to Quintin Johnston TD pass gave Temple a 38-34 lead with less than five minutes remaining. Cy Woods marched down to the Wildcat goal line where the Wildcat defense stiffened. And with the game on the line and facing fourth down, the Wildcats failed to keep them out of the endzone. Even though Temple denied the PAT, Cy Woods used the PAT to eat time of the clock, not giving the Wildcats an opportunity to answer their score. Final score was 40-38.
On the day, Quintin Johnston had 6 touchdown receptions and Anthony Jackson had three.
