Varsity Football · Wildcats wrap up drills with annual Blue-White game

Samari Howard said he grew up idolizing Jeff Carr, Temple’s speedy former running back who helped lead the Wildcats to two district championships and a trip to the Class 5A Division I state championship game in 2014.

Temple coach Scott Stewart sees some of Carr’s quick-shifting style in Howard, a freshman who played a featured role at running back in the Wildcats’ Blue-White spring game Thursday evening when incoming senior standout Anthony Jackson was held out as a precaution against injury.

On the first play from scrimmage at warm, windy Wildcat Stadium, the Blue team’s Howard ran off right tackle and sprinted for a 40-yard gain. The 5-foot-7, 160-pounder added rushes of 6, 11, 9 and 4 yards before zipping around the right end for a 1-yard touchdown.
