The first four innings were about as ideal as they could get for Temple, with District 12-6A co-leader Hewitt Midway visiting Tem-Cat Field where fog hovered for more than half of Tuesday’s contest.
Hayli Hesse worked her way through the Pantherettes’ lineup using an array of off-speed pitches while backed by a handful of defensive gems, some routine and others — the first of two diving catches in center field by Alexis Lewis and third baseman Ashley Alcozer’s put out from her knees — of the spectacular sort. The Tem-Cats then put Midway on the ropes in the bottom of the fourth inning when Makenna Holland singled home Bryanna Salas for the game’s opening run.
Fortunes changed dugouts in the fifth, though. A walk and three consecutive bunts, two of them for hits, set the table for Midway’s five-run frame that paved the way for a 6-1 victory.
