Everybody involved in last Friday night’s Temple-Belton game had a lot to digest in the aftermath of the Wildcats’ 58-55, triple-overtime victory in an action-packed 3½ hours of rivalry football at energetic Wildcat Stadium.
There was plenty of good. Temple senior Jared Wiley passed for 366 yards, and the last of his three touchdown connections with Quentin Johnston was a 25-yard strike to give Temple its sixth consecutive win over Belton. Senior De’Jon Overton and junior Anthony Jackson rushed for a combined 152 yards and three touchdowns.
There also was plenty of bad. Temple’s starting defense hadn’t allowed a point in its previous three games but missed assignments and allowed Belton to compile a staggering 542 total yards, including 464 passing by Connor Carothers. Temple gave up three scoring passes of 50-plus yards, plus Anthony Brown’s 33-yard catch-and-run TD with 13 seconds remaining that forced the battle into overtime.
