Varsity Football · Senior safety Aviles has a lot to say in Temple’s secondary

Temple’s defensive player who talks the most trash isn’t one of its two seniors who are committed to Big 12 Conference programs: cornerback Markel Reed (Texas Tech) and end TJ Franklin (Baylor).

Nor is it three-season starting safety Monto President Jr. or productive three-year end D’Ashton Merida or either of the Wildcats’ sure-tackling senior linebackers, Antoine Holiday and Chris Hooper.

No, Temple’s undisputed leader in the trash talk department played sparingly as a junior and didn’t become a starter until his senior season, meaning he has all of two starts under his belt.

Meet free safety Hunter Aviles.

The long-haired guy wearing No. 7 has backed up his ample smack talk with an interception in each game and seven tackles overall for Temple (2-0), which hosts Harker Heights (0-2) in the District 12-6A opener at 7:30 tonight at Wildcat Stadium.
