Coaching was always in Raymond Bennett’s blood. It was a life that took him from his Cameron birthplace to destinations all over Texas while his father, Raymond “Punk” Bennett, made coaching stops all over the state.
The younger Bennett appeared to be on the same circuitous career path through the first decade of his adult life.
However, Bennett’s third stint coaching alongside Bob McQueen began in 1973 and returned him to Central Texas where he remained until his death two months ago at 78.
“Coach Bennett was an unbelievable guy and good to the bone,” McQueen said. “Coach Bennett lived a coach’s life. He was around coaches all his life. He was a guy I could talk to about anything. He was a confidant.”
