Brandon Williams’ RBI double in the top of the ninth inning broke a deadlock, College Station added an important insurance run on an error two batters later, and the Cougars outlasted Temple 4-3 in extra innings Tuesday night to clinch the District 18-5A title at Hallford Field.
The Wildcats (15-13, 7-4), who’ve lost three straight league games by one one run, had the chance to pull within a half-game of College Station (19-8, 10-2) — which completed its regular season — and get themselves back into position to claim a piece of the district championship heading into Friday night’s finale at Bryan.
“I’m happy with the way we played, I really am. I would’ve loved to have won that game, that would’ve been awesome. But, we didn’t,” said Temple coach Toby Rumfield, whose team is now one game behind Bryan Rudder in third.
