HEWITT – The Tem-Cat freshman girls basketball team used a a 11-2 fourth quarter run to defeat Lorena 32-23 on Saturday afternoon to win the championship game of the Midway Freshman Tournament.
The two championship contenders battle tightly for three quarters with Lorena holding a 12-11 lead at halftime. Temple managed to knot the score at 21-21 going to the fourth. However, led by Haleigh Johnson’s 6 fourth quarter points, Temple dominated the fourth ad final quarter to claim the tournament championship.
Johnson led the way with 12 points in the game while Tamera Copeland dropped in 11 points for the Tem-Cats. Quinteria Russell had 3, Oriana Valdez 4 and Raven Riley with 2.
Temple opened the tournament on Thursday with a pair of wins to reach the championship game. In their opener, they defeated Harker Heights 36-9. Haleigh Johnson led the way with 13 points, Tamera Copeland 8, Esmeralda Maranco 7 and Deasia Stanton 6.
Later that afternoon, the Tem-Cats defeated Killeen 42-26. Johnson led the way with 16 points, Copeland with 9, Maranco with 8 and Russell with 5.
Temple improves to 5-0 on the season and will return to play on Tuesday at Manor with tipoff scheduled for 11:00 am.
