Depending on postseason scheduling, Friday night might have been the final game at Hallford Field for Temple baseball senior standouts such as Reid Hesse, Dylan Cheek, Zach Rumfield and Hunter Torrez.
Junior Eli Mendoza and sophomore Jared Wiley certainly provided big sparks to help the Wildcats surge into the Class 5A playoffs with positive momentum.
Mendoza took a perfect game into the fifth inning and tripled to ignite Temple’s three-run first that featured Wiley’s two-run home run, propelling the Wildcats to a 10-4 victory over second-place Bryan in a District 18-5A finale.
“We just have a lot of confidence right now. We’re ready to go,” said Mendoza (6-1), the right-hander who tallied one strikeout in each of his six innings before Cheek pitched a scoreless seventh. “We’re in a tough district. I’m just happy we made the dance.”
