COLLEGE STATION- The Wildcat baseball team earned a 5-4 victory over A&M Consolidated on Friday night to improve their district record to 2-0.
Temple carried a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the seventh but a pair of errors to start the inning led to two Tiger runs cutting the Wildcat lead to 5-4. However, Eli Mendoza got a strike out to end contest leaving the potential tying run stranded at second base.
Temple never trailed in the contest taking a 1-0 lead in the second courtesy a Hunter Torrez double and a Tiger error. The third inning saw TJ Rumfield single home Dylan Cheek giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Consolidated threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Mendoza loaded the bases on a hit batter with two outs; Consolidated’s K. Goodman singled to right scoring one run, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Jared Wiley preserving the 2-1 Temple lead.
Temple then got lead off singles from Reid Hesse and Dylan Cheek to start the fifth. Mendoza then scored Hesse on a RBI double giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead. Following a Tiger error that allowed Cheek to score, Wiley singled to right scoring courtesy runner Ty Culp putting the Wildcats up 5-1.
Mendoza earned the win for Temple as he tossed seven innings, allowing four runs, ten hits, and striking out seven.
Temple collected 10 hits in the contest with Mendoza going 3-4 with a double and RBI; Cheek was 2-4 with 2 runs scored; Torrez was 1-3 with a double and TJ Rumfield 1-3 with an RBI.
Temple improved to 13-3 on the season and will host Bryan Rudder on Tuesday night at Hallford Field.
