Having already played five games in the Metroplex and one in Austin, coach Rex Nottage and his Newington College players have stops scheduled for San Antonio and Houston before their tour of Texas concludes. It’s off to Los Angeles after that. But not for basketball. Disneyland is on tap.
Temple’s upcoming slate involves its remaining 10 District 18-5A games, with the reward at the end of those being a potential trip to the postseason and not southern California. Still, incentive enough, of course.
On Wednesday night, though, prior to Newington, an all-boys private high school established in 1863 located in Sydney, Australia, and Temple going about their separate ways, they met in Wildcat Gym. And both teams took plenty from the encounter — aside from the gifts that were exchanged before tipoff.
Newington used a four-point spurt bridging a back-and-forth third quarter and the fourth, another seven-point burst early in the final period and closed the contest with a 9-0 run for a 68-52 victory over the gracious-host Wildcats.
