WACO – The Temple Wildcats got a complete game shutout from Dylan Cheek and a first inning 2-run home run off the bat of Eli Mendoza to defeat the Waco Lions 7-0 in District 17-5A action Friday night.
Eli Mendoza sparked the Wildcat offense early as he followed a Dylan Cheek single with two outs in the first with a line drive home run to left field giving the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead. It turned out to be all Cheek needed as he shut down the Waco offense with seven shutout innings, giving up four hits while striking out seven.
The Wildcat offense continued to plug away single runs in the second and fifth innings. The fifth saw Cheek pick up an RBI single extending the Temple lead to 4-0. However, Cheeks success wasn’t just limited to the mound as he was 2-3 with a walk and the RBI at the plate.
Temple put the game away with three runs in the seventh as the Wildcats got an RBI single by Mendoza, a passed ball, and an error to extend the Temple lead to 7-0. Mendoza finished the night going 3-4 with a home run, 3 RBI and two runs scored. Reid Hesse went 3-4 with a double and run scored while Hunter Torrez was 1-2 with a double and walk.
The Wildcats (14-9) on the season Will close the season with a chance to claim their second district title next Friday as they host Elgin at Hallford Field.
