The Temple Boys Cross Country team opened the season on Friday by hosting the Temple Invitational at Lions Park. And, for the host team, it was a good start for the season.
Temple placed fifth overall in the 5A/6A Boys Division on the day. Temple coach David Melvin was pleased to see the progress with his boys team. Temple which has struggled in past years with numbers of participants fielded eight boys on both the Varsity and JV teams with many seeing their first high school action.
Temple had two Top 10 finishers in Israel De La Fuente and Wesley Johnson. De La Fuente finished the 3 mile course which included one of the most challenging hills they will run all season in 17:42 for 6th place. Johnson was right behind in 8th at 17:49.
Treyce Bailey finished in 18:47 and Holden Diserens 18:49 took 17th and 18th respectively for Top 20 finishes.
Others competing in the varsity division were Cory Jonason 19:35, Jose Garcia 20:14, Lane Medrano 20:37 and John Utterback 21:01.
Temple’s JV team was paced by Alan Lyles who placed 19th overall with a time of 22:09 was closely followed by a trio of Wildcats beginning in 22nd with Jordan Weaver, Shane Kirby and Juan Garcia.
Temple will look to continue improvement as they will run in the Belton Invitational on Thursday.
