The Tem-Cat Volleyball team broke into the win column in a big way on Thursday as the Tem-Cats went 3-0 on the opening day of the Gatesville Varsity Tournament.
Temple had opened the season with an 0-7 mark to start the year including going 0-6 at last weeks Abilene Tournament. However, first your coach Courtney Mitchell’s squad showed a lot improvement over the past week. Temple defeated Llano, Waco Reicher and former district rival Harker Heights to put the Tem-Cat season back on the upswing.
Temple opened the tournament by defeating Llano 25-14, 25-21. The Cats were led by Jenna Green’s 5 kills, 3 digs and ace to keep the Tem-Cats in control. Darby Voight was strong defensively leading the team with 10 digs. Angel Rivera picked up six assist while Jule Hendy delivered 4 herself along with a pair of aces.
Temple kept the momentum going in Game 2 defeating Waco Reicher in three thrilling hard fought games 25-16, 22-25, 25-14. Green again picked up 6 kills and 3 digs. Hendy shined with 12 assist and four serving aces. Shakia Rayson was a presence at the net recording a team high 7 kills.
The day wasn’t done as Temple then matched up with former district rival Harker Heights and the Tem-Cats confidence was growing as they took the match in two games 25-18, 25-8 for their third win of the day. Green once again had a solid game with 2 blocks, 2 kills, 3 digs and one ace. Tiffani Mays two blocks and 3 kills at the net. Abby Petter picked up 2 kills herself along with 4 serving aces while Rivera dished out 5 assist and 4 digs.
Temple (3-7) will now take Friday off and return to play on Saturday in the semi-finals of the Gatesville tournament. Temple will face the host team, Gatesville Lady Hornets at 4:00 with a chance to advance to the championship match set for 6:00.
