Fillmore’s interception fends off feisty A&M Consol

Temple vs. A&M Consolidated 012

With only 10 minutes of clock time gone on a homecoming Friday night at Wildcat Stadium, fast-starting Temple already owned a 21-0 lead and it certainly didn’t seem likely that the Wildcats would need a last-minute defensive stand to stave off undefeated College Station A&M Consolidated.

But because the Wildcats’ attempts to go for the Tigers’ jugular proved unsuccessful during the next 2 hours of actual time, Temple’s defense was required to make a vital play deep in its territory in the closing seconds.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, senior safety Dalvin Fillmore was equal to the task.

With Temple clinging to an eight-point lead and A&M Consolidated having driven to the Wildcats’ 31-yard line, Fillmore flashed in front of receiver Steven Ray in the back of the end zone and made the game-sealing interception of Gage Pahl’s pass under the goal post to preserve Temple’s too-close-for-comfort 28-20 victory in a District 18-5A showdown.

“It was all wanted pressure. We want that kind of pressure on us,” said Fillmore, who had shifted from free safety to strong safety after senior Will Howard exited with a knee injury. “When I saw the play develop, something told me the ball was going to get thrown to my player. I just played my technique like I do every day in practice.”
