Jemiyah Franklin and Willari Watson finally get a chance to run for themselves.

After handling the baton on Temple’s medal-winning relays last year, Franklin and Watson are back at the state meet as seniors with chances to take home some hardware in their individual events.

Florin Nita believes he’s competing for more than himself.

Born with spina bifida, he has used a wheelchair to get around since the second grade. After two years of basketball, the Temple freshman decided to give track a whirl and earned a trip to the biggest meet in his first try.

Tonight, all three will enter Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin with their own agendas but a shared goal — to go as fast they can on that orange oval at the UIL Track and Field State Championships.

“I won’t change anything because it’s an individual event instead of a relay,” said Watson, who will compete in the Class 5A 100 meters. “I’ll stick to the same routine, warming up, stretching and hoping I get out and finish the race strong.”
