COLLEGE STATION — Temple’s hopes of advancing all three relays to the state meet evaporated in the humidity of the Brazos Valley on Thursday evening, when the Wildcats stunningly finished a distant fifth in the 4×200 during an otherwise efficient performance at the District 17/18-5A area track and field meet.

The top four finishers qualified for the Class 5A Region III meet, and Temple’s boys and girls will have representatives in 17 events next week in Humble. The only surprise will be the Wildcats’ absence in the 4×200, a race they ran at the state meet the last two years.

With its horses running on the other two relays and in individual events, Temple gave the 4×2 baton to underclassmen Anthony Jackson, Monto President Jr., B.J. Sculark and D’Yonte Heckstall. After finishing second at the district meet, the Wildcats improved their time to 1 minute, 29.17 seconds but slipped to fifth place — crossing the line 3 seconds after winner Corsicana and behind College Station, Whitehouse and Bryan Rudder.
