BRYAN – Temple and Bryan Rudder each saw strong pitching performances throughout the night however a two out wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Dylan Boyd from third base giving the Rudder Rangers a 3-2 victory over Temple in District 18-5A action on Thursday night.
With the game tied at 2-2, Boyd singled to center with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later moved to third on a fielders choice to Reid Hesse at shortstop. Then on a 3-1 pitch, Boyd raced home from third base on a wild pitch to score the winning run for the Rangers.
Both teams were strong on the mound on Thursday as Travis Triola earned the win for Rudder. He pitched the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs, two hits, striking out three, and walking one. Tanner Treat started the game for Rudder. He went four and a third innings, allowing two runs, one hit, and striking out five. Reid Hesse started the game for Temple. He threw six and a third innings, giving up zero earned runs, four hits, and striking out seven.
Temple struck first in the second inning for a 1-0 lead when Eli Mendoza scored on a passed ball. Rudder responded with a pair of unearned runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead over the Wildcats.
TJ Rumfield knotted the game at 2-2 in the 5th with a RBI single to right scoring Seth Bazilius who was running for Reid Hesse who had walked earlier in the inning.
The Wildcats had opportunities to retake the lead late. In the sixth, Zach Rumfield walked to lead off the inning but was left stranded at third base. In the eighth, Jared Wiley reached on a one out single and Zach Rumfield reached on an error. A fielders choice by Dylan Cheek advanced both runners to second and third however, Hunter Torres grounded out to third to end the Wildcat threat.
Temple did work seven walks from Ranger pitching but only managed three hits on the night. Jared Wiley was 2-4 at the plate while TJ Rumfield was 1-4 with an RBI. Neither team had an extra base hit on the night.
Temple (5-4, 16-7) will try to rebound next Tuesday when they host Waco at Hallford Field beginning at 7 pm.
