HEWITT — Temple coach Quinton Gibson stared stone-faced toward the court during a funky fourth quarter Thursday night, when a seemingly comfortable Wildcats lead dwindled at an alarming rate because of a series of turnovers and a wily, yet effective, ploy employed by Georgetown coach Russell Miller.

Not one to call timeouts when things spiral against his squad, Gibson was forced into such a move down the stretch. No harm done, really, and chalk it up to another growth spurt in Temple’s 2016-17 season.

The Wildcats withstood the Eagles’ late charge and sealed the Gold Division final with a 61-53 victory, ending the M.T. Rice Tournament with five wins, including four straight, in six games and gaining a dose of confidence in the process.

“To me, it’s a learning experience. Everything that we do I try to make a learning experience for the guys, and this was one,” Gibson said. “This week, that’s a heck of a way to end 2016 and hopefully we can keep this ball rolling into 2017.”
