WACO — The Temple girls held a six-point lead over Waco at halftime Tuesday afternoon. That was before Tem-Cats coach Tamarah Sanders challenged her squad to play a cleaner brand of basketball in the second half and before Jhakya Dilworth scored 10 of the team’s 19 third-quarter points.
Temple wasted no time in rising to Sanders’ challenge, outscoring District 18-5A opponent Waco 19-7 in the third to take a comfortable 45-27 lead into the final frame, and the Tem-Cats remained undefeated in league play with a 63-35 victory.
“(Sanders) talked to us at halftime and told us we have to step our game up, and that’s what we did,” said freshman Wilashia Burleson, who scored 20 points, including nine in the fourth. “We came out strong and played as a team.”
After their advantage was cut to 26-20 by halftime, the Tem-Cats (11-6, 4-0) responded with a 9-1 run to begin the third, which included a 3-pointer from Dilworth. Waco (7-9, 1-2) didn’t tally its first field goal of the second half until 4:14 remained in the third.
