Temple vs. Killeen 488

A first-time head coach promoted from a coordinator position takes his team on the road for the season-opening Temple-Belton rivalry game — and wins.

One year ago, that description fit Temple’s Scott Stewart, who in his head coaching debut after rising from defensive coordinator guided his Wildcats to a weather-delayed, 28-20 comeback over Belton at Tiger Field.

Now, Belton’s Sam Skidmore, elevated from serving as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator, is hoping that the aforementioned scenario repeats itself — well, except for Temple winning, of course.

Class 6A Belton seeks its first win against Temple since 2010, while the 5A fourth-ranked Wildcats shoot for their fifth consecutive victory in the series when the Bell County neighbors kick off the season with tonight’s showdown at Wildcat Stadium in front of an anticipated crowd of 11,000-plus energetic fans.
