WACO – The Temple junior varsity blue baseball team swept a pair games from University to open district play on Thursday. Temple got a no-hitter on the mound from Nathaniel Chavez in Game 1 to win 8-0 and later rallied for a 16-5 win in Game 2.
Nathaniel Chavez didn’t allow a single hit as the Wildcats defeated University in Game 1. Chavez went five innings and struck out six Trojans along the way.
Temple scored all the runs they would need by pushing across five runs in the top of the first inning and then tacked on single runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Tim Hall led the Wildcats offensively going 2-3 at the plate and scored three runs. Cain Lopez picked up a pair of RBI for the Wildcats. Temple ran wild on the bases pick up 10 stolen bases in the game; Tim Hall led the Wildcats with four stolen bases and Riley McNeil had three.
In Game 2, the Wildcats had to rally back from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat University 16-5. University tallied 3 runs in the second inning to lead the Wildcats 4-0, but the Temple answered with their own 3-run inning in the fourth keyed by an RBI single from Corey Goynes.
Temple took the lead in the 6th with nine runs and tacked on four more runs in the seventh.
Tim Hall earned the win for Temple on the mound. He tossed five innings, allowing four runs, three hits, and striking out seven.
Temple collected had 14 hits in the game. Corey Goynes was 3-5 with and RBI and run scored; Cain Lopez was 2-4 with a double, RBI and run scored and Xavier Aviles was 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Temple also recorded 8 stolen bases with Corey Goynes and Xavier Aviles with two apiece.
Temple (10-4, 2-0) will host A&M Consolidated next Thursday in a double header at Hallford Field.
