Flat on Wildcat Stadium’s turf after an accidental collision with a teammate just a week into football practice last August, T.J. Rumfield’s thoughts wandered. He knew something was wrong and he feared the possibilities.
“I was just like, ‘Oh, my God, I think I just tore my ACL. I just ruined everything,’” he said, then described the sensation of getting up, trying to put weight on his right leg only to have it “wobble” back and forth and “give out” as he crumbled back down.
“And then it turned out not to be that bad. Thank God,” said the guy with the broken femur.
Aside from those initial moments, including an ambulance ride to the hospital and some withdrawals as the Wildcats made their way to the Class 5A Division I state championship game, Rumfield didn’t think of the glass as half empty.
Thus began a full recovery.
