For all the bumps along the way, the Temple girls soccer team’s 2016 endeavor ended on a bit of an upswing. But one glaring void after a turbulent campaign has this year’s Lady Wildcats working to be ahead of schedule once the meaty part of the season arrives.
“Going into last year, we lost a lot of seniors and right before district we lost our starting goalkeeper to illness, and we struggled with some injuries,” said fourth-year coach Royce Mitchel, whose team kicks off the new year with games against Pflugerville Connally and Austin Hyde Park starting at 2 p.m. today in Pflugerville. “Things just kept piling on and we couldn’t overcome. Trying to put the pieces together, we did better than we were expected to do. We just weren’t fortunate to make playoffs.”
Temple’s 21-year playoff run ended after a 5-10-4 record. The final figures were boosted by a late-season surge that saw the Lady Wildcats earn points from five of their last seven games, including three victories. But the push ultimately lacked one more win and thus a new streak is now there to be formed.
