Temple vs, Rudder 072

The Temple Tem-Cats volleyball team showed flashes of brilliance Tuesday night against the District 18-5A leading Bryan Lady Vikings but also showed the same problems that have plagued it all season — unforced errors and mental mistakes.

The end result was a 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 sweep by the Lady Vikings at Wildcat Gym that officially eliminated the Tem-Cats (9-16, 1-8) from postseason contention.

“It’s a mental toughness game,” Temple coach Courtney Mitchell said. “I’ve talked to the girls about remaining mentally in the game.”

The Tem-Cats were tough on Bryan all night, primarily defensively. Temple’s back row — led by libero Ariyan Johnson, who had 11 digs — caused fits for the Lady Vikings’ front line, picking up a total of 39 digs.

“Our coach has told us we have to be mentally ready,” Johnson said. “Be confident and get to the next ball. We’ve been working on that all week in practice.”

The back line’s effectiveness was evident early as Temple led the first set 12-8, before Bryan took a timeout to regroup.
