Chuey Hernandez never expected to have such a big impact on the Temple cross country team as a freshman.

“To be honest, not really,” Hernandez responded when asked if he expected to have as much success as he’s had in his first year running for the Wildcats.

Temple coach David Melvin, however, saw it coming.

“We knew Chuey was a talent,” Melvin said. “Obviously he won a lot of races in junior high, so we were definitely excited to have him in the program this year. He’s a competitor. We know how talented he is and how much he likes to win.”

Hernandez took first place with a time of 16 minutes, 22.9 seconds and led the Wildcats to the team title at last week’s Waco Invitational.
