Second-year Temple tennis coach Robert Girard said it has been “quite a while” since the Wildcats have qualified more than one representative, whether it be individual or doubles, to a spring-season regional tournament.
At the District 17-5A meet earlier this month, the chance to send multiple Temple athletes took twists and turns when the Wildcats’ two mixed doubles teams squared off in the championship match.
“It’s very interesting because they know they could possibly knock out their friends and teammates,” Girard said. “Both wanted to win but both were nervous.”
Sophomore Bailey Voss and senior partner Akash Ramanathan bested the duo of Mary Kate Montgomery and John Swords — 6-2, 6-3 — who then had to scrap for their own Class 5A Region III tournament berth in a playback match. Swords and Montgomery regrouped to cap Temple’s gold-silver finish in the event.
